INAUGURATION AND SWEARING IN OF THE THIRD ASSEMBLY OF ADANSI ASOKWA DISTRICT ASSEMBLY

The District Chief Executive in his address highlighted on the creation of the district on the 15th March 2018 through an LI 2331 (2018). He said the district is made up of 27 electoral areas, 4 area town councils and shares boundaries with 7 districts namely Obuasi East, Akrofrom, Adansi North, New Edubiase, Asante Akyim South, Bosome Freho and Akyimansa of Eastern Region.

According to the DCE, the major economic activity of the district is farming which forms about 77% and the remaining 23% being trading. The district has a major market at fumso on Thursdays and other four (4) markets spread across the district.

On education the DCE stressed that the district has one public senior high school, one private senior high school, 61 public junior high schools and 65 private junior high schools.

On the health sector, the district has 14 health facilities including 8 chip compounds with no district hospital and a medical doctor.

He briefly touched on the problems of the Assembly which include lack of administrative office of the assembly which has pushed the assembly into renting 3 different houses for its administrative functions and lack of teachers and nurses’ bungalow. Telecommunication network is also a major problem for some of its communities.

He therefore tasked the newly elected assembly members to help the district in revenue mobilization so as to boost its IGF to undertake its responsibilities. He thanked Nananom for their immense contribution to the development of the district.

INAUGURAL ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT’S REPRESENTATIVE, HON MINISTER FOR FISHERIES AND MP FOR AWUTU SENYA EAST HON MAVIS HAWA KOOMSON

Hon Mavis Hawa Koomson speaking for and on behalf of the president stressed on the member’s core duties, to deliberate, plan, mobilize resources, make decisions including bylaws to ensure the transformation of the district towards the Ghana we all want. She entreated the members to help in the revenue mobilization efforts of the district assembly.

She said the occasion was a milestone in deepening decentralization as stipulated in article 35 clause 60 of the 1992 constitution. The decentralization reforms started with 110 districts in 1988 and now the country can boost of 261 MMDAS. She stressed that the district assemblies are mandated to support the government policies and projects and to localize them into their action plan to the benefit of the people.

She also highlighted the core functions of the member’s mandate of section 16 clause 9 act 126 to maintain close contact with the electoral areas, consult the people on the issues to be discussed on the district assembly, collate their views, opinions and proposals and take part in communal and development activities.

In training and advancing the leadership qualities of the members she highlighted the preparedness of local government to undertake such tasks for their competence enhancement and orientation.

In conclusion reminded she reminded them that, their people require of them selflessness, devotion to duty, a very accountable stewardship and above all their ability to articulate the needs of the people to guide the district development agenda and ultimately improve the quality of their livelihood.

She formally declared the Adansi Asokwa district assembly duly inaugurated.
